The fact that you're asking this question tells me that you're NOT a ';hard case.'; A truly tough-minded person knows who he / she is, and doesn't let someone else define them. People who do this are doing it for their own purposes, not yours. They either want something, or want to punish you for not being what they want. Either way, it has nothing to do with you -- only them. Ignore them.
I have no clue what you mean by ';hard case';. I am only assuming now, you mean ';strong character'; and although I am a woman, I'd like to think that ';men'; do prefer women who have strong personalities. ';Guys';, well, that's a whole different story !
