Can I put my old main hard drive into an external case?

My old computer died and I bought a laptop. I would like to get the stuff off my old hard drive and I'm thinking the best way to do it is to buy an external case for it then plug it into my laptop via USB. Would this work seeing as it was not meant to be an external drive and still has all the boot files on it? Maybe there is a better way? thanks for your help!

*oh its an older hard drive (not sure what you call it, but its not an SATA)Can I put my old main hard drive into an external case?
the answer is yes if it is an older drive it is probably an IDE drive you can get an adapter or case at tigerdirect.com
