If you buy a flight case or hard-sided case and store your electric guitar in it, is it okay to check it at the flight counter?

Yes you should be able to check your guitar in, but, if they lose your luggage, (and they have lost luggage before), you're now short a guitar. And they don't handle those bags or cases with care.Can you let your guitar stored in the cargo area if you put it in a hard case?
I travel a lot for work, and I bought a garage sale special for flying(If the bag bashers trash it, I'm out $5.00). I gate check it if I can't stow it in the overhead, but good luck!
I'd ring your airline and ask what the proceedure is for taking a guitar, the cost of a hard case etc, you won't be able to take it with you on the plane as the overhead storage is too small.
